I feel to my core my values, virtues, and morals are founded in respect and integrity. I fully believe that the greatest character of a human is mutual respect toward your fellow man and woman. This involves other virtues such as empathy, but respect toward all provides everyone in a community the ability to understand that we are looking for the same things which are safety, success, and love. I try to build this culture and partnership of respect in my classroom. When this is accomplished we as a collective are able to succeed. I believe in respect in and out of the classroom. I feel the same way about integrity as well. I have always prided myself on hard work and to do “the best that I can.” I say often the worst phrase in our culture is “good enough.” I hold myself and my students to a higher standard. I always ask for the best I can do, or the best my students can do. This is the definition of integrity and is a key value in successful individuals.
These are my two strongest values for myself, and I feel they make me a strong moral model for my classroom. I feel being a positive role model to elementary students is a vital and critical tool for their character education. I ask my students to treat me and their peers wit the same amount of respect that I treat them. Therefore, I must hold my work and my character to the highest of standards. This includes all core values and morals. This along with consistent direct and indirect character education provides and environment for long term success and growth in any student. I perform these educational opportunities during class council meetings and morning meetings. This allows for real conversations in a class setting where we can discuss the purpose and goals for treating others with respect and holding ourselves to high standards. This is something I do every morning. I do this alongside with proper modeling at every point of the day.
This is clearly not the end of my educational road. I feel with my integrity I am destined for great accomplishments in the field of education. I am not sure what those accomplishments are, but I am confident that if I keep a focus on character development and demand the best from myself I will accomplish this success. I would like to move to administration or curriculum development if possible. However, that does not mean I can move away from character education just because I am out of the classroom. Character education is a school and district priority and is essential for academic growth and producing productive citizens in the future. I will constantly be looking for new resources for myself from my peers, my superiors, and my own academic resources. You can never have enough tools for your tool box, and I will always be on the lookout for more tools. I would like to keep my focus on respect and integrity on a consistent basis in the classroom. However, like the lesson presented I would like to incorporate more character development into the content areas.
Character education is a vital and essential part of the goal of education. We need to create a safe environment for the present and the future. We as educators can accomplish this very important goal with some hard but necessary work. We must model positive morals and virtues at all times, we must provide direct character education with constructive conversations, and we need to create cooperative learning opportunities like this project. These parts working together accomplish the term success for the students and the culture.
